Vodafone GigaCube (Huawei B528) In First Test

Last month, Vodafone has presented the GigaCube for a package of routers and mobile phone rates. The router is the Huawei B528, which is also without Vodafone branding. Only the outer packaging carries the design of the telecommunication service provider. The GigaCube itself has the manufacturer Huawei’s logo and there is no indication of Vodafone. Now we have the opportunity to have closer look at the GigaCube router.

Not suitable for mobile use

The Vodafone GigaCube is 105 x 105 x 181 millimeters in size. The body is not in small size, so you may not take it in hand like Huawei E5787 mobile WiFi hotspots. For this reason alone, the GigaCube is not suitable for mobile use, but it’s cool for the weekend house, the caravan, the hotel room or the apartment. In addition, there is no inserted battery or replacable battery in the Huawei B528 GigaCube. Instead, the unit is powered only by the included power supply.

As an alternative to WLAN, a notebook can also be connected to the router via a network cable. Such a cable is included with the GigaCube. The connector is located on the back of the device. There is also the socket with which the power supply is connected to the mobile hotspot. Under one flap there are also jacks, via which external antennas can be connected to the GigaCube. The connection for a VoIP telephone, which is also located on the back of the router, has been deactivated according to Vodafone specifications. We could not test this so far.

On the front, we can see not only the on/off switch and the WPS button, but also four light-emitting diodes. These indicate whether the B528 GigaCube is powered, whether the WLAN hotspot is available and whether the LAN port is being used. The fourth LED indicates whether the router is connected to the mobile network.

Easy Setup

The GigaCube can be configured via a connected computer, a smartphone or a tablet. The Internet address to configure the router is giga.cube, user need enter it in the Internet browser. The default password for the web front-end is located on the bottom of the router. Here is also the SSID and WLAN password specified. In addition, the SIM card (micro SIM format) slot is located on the underside.

After the SIM card is inserted directly and the GigaCube is switched on, the LED for the mobile radio reception is initially red. Reason: The SIM PIN must be entered via the web-based menu if the PIN search on the SIM card has not been switched off, which is at least partly the case with the operator cards defined for the GigaCube. After this, the initial setting can be made. A personalized SSID can be assigned, which can be connected with a special password.

On page 2, you can read about the function in the configuration menu, and to what extent, the GigaCube also allows the use of SIM cards from other networks. During the initial setup, the access data for the router menu can also be adjusted. In addition to own WLAN data for the hotspot on 2.4 GHz, the individualization for 5 GHz is also integrated. The settings can be changed subsequently. Furthermore, the user can decide whether to operate parallel to 2.4 and 5 GHz or only on one of these frequency ranges. In principle, the WLAN function can also be switched off completely if, for example, only a device via a network cable is connected to the router for the Internet access.

SIM free & Unlocked

We have also used a SIM card from other network provider such as O2, which has worked smoothly in the GigaCube. Say: The Vodafone GigaCube router was not equipped with a SIM lock or Netlock and it can be used with any operator cards. The access data for foreign networks may not be recognized automatically.

To do this, a new profile must only be created in the Connection Setup – Profile Management menu.

What Interesting is the possibility to set up a VPN directly on the Huawei B528 router. The WLAN channels can be selected manually. These are automatically assigned by default. The user interface is very similar to Huawei’s other mobile hotspots. The WLAN range is significantly higher than the Huawei E5776 mobile hotspot, which we had tested for comparison.

Fast Wireless Internet Connection

The GigaCube supports speeds of up to 300 MBit/s in the downstream via LTE, especially on the LTE-Advanced networks. Also Internet connections can be established with the router via UMTS/HSPA and GPRS/EDGE. In the first test, the Huawei B528 sold by Vodafone GigaCube left a good impression. The setup is intuitively possible (can be seen from the fact that the access data for the 5 GHz, WLAN area must be adjusted later) and the WiFi range is quite comparable to that of a FRITZ! Box 7490, which we had tested at the same Place.

The Vodafone GigaCube could serve as a DSL replacement, but less suitable for the more extensive file exchange and intensive streaming. Exciting is the possibility to use any SIM card. Thus, the Huawei B528 GigaCube can also be bought at the comparatively low price from www.4gltemall.com, for example on a holiday abroad, where the GigaCube tariff is not available, can also be used with a local SIM card. And there is newer model Huawei B618 LTE CPE Cube available now, which supports higher level LTE networks.

Huawei E5180 Cube for Congstar Homespot Test

At the IFA, congstar presented its first mobile phone tariff at the beginning of September, which also officially foresees the use of Telekom’s LTE network. However, the offer can only be used in a certain place, for example, to have a broadband internet connection in the caravan, at the campsite or in the student residence.

In the contract, congstar presented a WLAN Cube, also a suitable router manufactured by Huawei, which converts the LTE Internet access into a WLAN signal, which then makes it possible to provide internet for smartphones, tablets and notebooks with a wireless Internet access supply. A device can also be connected directly to the WLAN Cube using an Ethernet cable.

We have s the opportunity to test the homespot rate of congstar together with the WLAN Cube since last week. The SIM card must be inserted into the router slot. The WLAN Cube is then supplied with power via the included power supply unit. The PIN of the SIM card must then be entered. This works via the configuration menu of the router, which can be reached at address 192.168.8.1 via a connected smartphone, tablet or notebook. For future use, the SIM PIN can be stored so that it does not have to be entered again.

Congstar Homespot from Huawei E5180

The WLAN access data and the homespot model are to be found on the underside of the router, which in the original is called Huawei E5180. After initial commissioning, the SSID as well as the password can be customized. In addition, users have the option of switching from the automatic selection of the WLAN channel to manual selection. The WLAN Cube is supported only by the much heavily overloaded 2.4 GHz range. If you want to use a 5 GHz router, you have to check other models such as the latest Huawei B525 and Huawei E5186 wireless gateway. If you want to use your own router instead of the congstar WLAN Cube, you have to make sure that it has the LTE standard and the frequency ranges used around 800, 1800 and 2600 MHz.

However, the test also showed that congstar Homespot is not only working with 4G network. If LTE is not available at the desired location, the cube would work on 3G or 2G network automatically. We have switched the WLAN Cube, however, experimentally via the configuration menu to the GSM-only mode. Afterwards we were shown a strong signal.

In addition to the signal strength of the received mobile network, the configuration menu for the Huawei E5180 router also shows the current connection time and the transferred data volume. The WLAN status and information about the connected users are also available.

congstar as well as the manufacturer Huawei officially speak the E5180 Cube of a WLAN range of up to 250 meters. We have not achieved this value in practice. However, the signal is quite comparable to that of a classic DSL router like an AVM FRITZ! Box 7490. A mobile hotspot is much weaker. If, for example, a Huawei E5776 is only sufficient for supplying a small apartment or a hotel room, the congstar WLAN Cube can quite well cover a one-family house with wireless Internet access.

Speed Test Good

We have continuous operated the wireless hotspot over several days. Internet access was always reliably available. A restart of the router was not required to stay on reception. The two lights on the outside of the device, which on the one hand display WLAN availability and, at the very least, the current strength of the received LTE signal, is practical.

Over several days, we have examined the data transfer rates offered by congstar’s internet access. The provider itself provides up to 20 MBit/s in the downstream. This value was also achieved in the test, whereby the LTE signal strength also plays a role here. If only a medium reception level is displayed on the router, the data throughput also drops.

On average, we reached between 20 and 21 MBit/s in the downstream and 5 to 6.5 MBit/s in the upstream. The response times were between 17 and 25 ms. The congstar homespot therefore provided similar performance data, such as a VDSL-25 connection in the fixed network. Even the somewhat higher latencies compared to the fixed net do not make themselves noticeable with normal surfing, with the use of e-mails, fairs, etc. It may not be the case for gamers, who need the lowest possible ping times.

It should be borne in mind that our performance tests have only been carried out at the location in Hessian Spessart, which is registered as the usage address for the congstar Homespot. We also carried out measurements on different days and at different times of the day. The results were quite similar, with Telekom’s LTE-800 radio cell, which is available here, with a unrestricted data SIM generally providing data rates between 40 and 50 MBit/s in the downstream.

However, our results are not comparable to data rates and ping times at other sites. Depending on the number of users and the user behavior, depending on the network configuration and capacity, there can be significant differences. Above all, in cities it is quite possible that the well-developed LTE network of the Telekom has some overloading phenomena.

In summary, the Huawei E5180 congstar homespot is good for wireless supply at a house, but missing the 5GHz WiFi band. The Ethernet port is also good for desktop and the internet speed is also good for most cases. LTE CAT 6 modem

The Vodafone GigaCube router, also named Huawei B528s-23a, internally has a modern HiSilicon modem (Balong 722) which supports LTE category 6. In principle, the wireless connection can reach up to 300 MBit/s fast. In the upload, a maximum of 50 MBit/s can be achieved. The chip also supports the most important LTE bands for use in Europe. In detail, the LTE Bands includes band 1, 3, 7, 8, 20 and 32. If the LTE reception is not given, the GigaCube router can also switch to GMS or UMTS/HSDPA. Abroad, Vodafone excludes the use anyway! So you must get the unlocked Vodafone GigaCube if you want to use it abroad.

WLAN function with the GigaCube router

The GigaCube also provide the WLAN module supporting up to WLAN ac, so that wireless LAN with gigabit speed is also possible. The hotspot can bring up to 64 devices on the Internet simultaneously. On this point, the B528 is really powerful than its predecessor Huawei E5180 and E5170.

Other characteristics

Fortunately, there are two antenna ports on the back of the GigaCube router. According to Vodafone, the focus is on use in the stationary and in remote areas. This means you can use the router both at home as a DSL replacement or just traveling as a mobile Internet connection. Mobile use is officially excluded. Thanks to the antenna connections, the reception strength can also be improved in remote areas via external LTE antenna.  The B528 also does not have an information display, but only 4 Info-LEDs on the front. These give the user the most important back-ups, such as signal strength.

The only annoyance with the GigaCube router is that it was dispensed with even a battery. Thus, a permanent, stationary power supply is required. Also the GigaCube missed an SD card slot or USB port. Telephone is not possible by the way.

Conclusion

Based on the Huawei B528, Vodafone offers a powerful, modern router for its GigaCube. The model is practical and comes without much fault. Only the missing battery is annoying. We would do the performance test once we get the GigaCube in hand, keep close eye on www.4gltemall.com if you are interested in Vodafone GigaCube or Huawei B528 LTE Cube.

Vodafone GigaCube – Huawei B528 LTE Router Released

A few days ago, Vodafone has officially presented the GigaCube to public with data tariff plan. The Vodafone GigaCube comes from the Chinese manufacturer huawei and the original model is Huawei B528. As the successor to Huawei E5180 Router, the Huawei B528 LTE router follows the design of E5180 cube but different in details. Of course, the technical features are upgraded as the technology develops. Technically, the Huawei B528 can reach speeds of up to 300 Mbps in the downlink (LTE Cat6), but Vodafone limits the GigaCube data rate to 150 MBit/s.

Huawei B528 Specifications

The Huawei B528 has not been sold in Germany; Vodafone is the first network operator to offer the router here. The focus is clearly on the case design in smart white plastic. But technically, the router is quite up-to-date thanks to the LTE Cat6 modem, Gigabit Ethernet and WLAN ac as the following data sheet shows.

Huawei B528s-23a LTE Router
Dimensions  105 x 105 x 181 mm
Chipset  HiSilicon Balong 722
Mobile communications LTE Cat6 (300/50 Mbit / s), UMTS with DC-HSPA +, GSM / EDGE
Frequency bands  LTE FDD: B1, B3, B7, B8, B20, B32. LTE TDD: B38
Connection Interfaces 1x Gigabit LAN (RJ45), 1x RJ11 (VoIP), 2x external antenna, MicroSIM slot
WLAN standard  IEEE 802.11b / g / n / ac (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz, 2 x 2 MIMO), up to 867 Mbps
Package Content  Huawei B528, power supply, RJ45 LAN cable, quick start guide

What interesting is that the Web Interface is probably not from Vodafone, but in the original Huawei design. The Voice over IP telephone function with the RJ11 connection should function basically, that user could use the Huawei B528 to call over the LTE network with the Vodafone GigaCube data tariff. For more practical performance, here you should wait for first user reports.

First router for LTE Band 32 (1500MHz)

Very interesting in the data sheet is also the indication that the Huawei B528 supports the LTE band 32. This is the frequency range around 1500 Megaherz. Vodafone had bought the radio spectrum in 2015 in this area and could use the tape in the future as a “supplementary downlink” to increase the capacity in the LTE network. Currently, Band 32 has not been used in Germany and there are also hardly any end-user devices supporting LTE 1500 or Band 32. The same is true for LTE Band 38, also this is so far not used in Vodafone, but is supported by the Huawei B528.

Even if the Huawei B528 router can theoretically achieve download speed up to 300 MBit/s and the Vodafone network offers even up to 500 MBit/s in the downlink in some places: the GigaCube, as customized Huawei B528 LTE router,  allows a maximum of 150 MBit/s in the downlink. Actually, Huawei had provided another LTE Cat6 router named Huawei E5186 or Vodafone B4000, which can also reach peak download speed to 300mbps. If you can’t wait the availability of GigaCube B528, you may consider Huawei E5186 OR Vodafone B4000.

Huawei B525 4G LTE Cat6 Router Review

More and more network providers in the world are upgrading their LTE network to LTE-advanced with carrier aggregation technology. Consequently, LTE terminals are demanded by the carriers and end users. As we had introduced before, the Huawei E5186 LTE router is the world’s first LTE-advanced router for LTE Category 6, and it was available in the market for almost two years.

Here now, huawei release a new LTE Cat6 router, the model number is Huawei B525. Supporting LTE Cat6 up to 300Mbps download speed, huawei B525 4G Router could connect easily with up to 64 users at top speed to the internet. So Huawei B525 router could be always accessible for you and your friends in office or at home for high speed internet access. The B525 router can be connected using a wireless LAN or Ethernet cable.

As we know, the Huawei B525 is already available for the network provider “Play” and “Telenor” in Europe. And the specific variant model number is Huawei B525s-23a. From the model, we can’t tell which LTE frequency bands are supported by the B525 router. But as a sub-model for European market, we suppose it should support LTE Band 1/3/7/8/20/32/38(800/900/1500/1800/2100/2600MHz,TDD 2600MHz). The router is also backward with 2G and 3G network.

From the appearance, we suppose the Huawei B525 comes from the Huawei B315 and of course get upgraded on technical specifications. In addition to 4 RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet ports, there is one RJ11 phone port. On the back, two connectors for external LTE antennas are covered by a cap. The connector type is SMA. Here we have two external LTE antenna for Huawei B525 as below. The powerful antennas ensure the best possible reception.

ZTE MF287 LTE Router Available as 3Neo for 3 Austria

The Austrian network operator 3 has once again added a new 4G LTE router to its product range: the 3neo by the Chinese manufacturer ZTE. At first glance, the design of the router looks unusual and definitely not like a usual wireless router. Technically speaking, the 3neo router comes from the factory model ZTE MF287, which has an LTE Cat6 modem for up to 300 MBit/s in the downlink and up to 50 MBit/s in the uplink. As a special feature, there is an integrated rechargeable battery, so you can use the 3neo as mobile router when on the go. ZTE MF287 3neo (4) 3neo LTE router

The design of the 3neo is unusual, but also has the connections to be found at the back, like the ZTE MF286 and Huawei E5186. On the side there is a LED light bar for the status display and on the top there is a LED light ring for the display of the network mode. Both the LTE antennas and the WLAN antennas are permanently integrated in the device and are not visible from the outside.

The modem of the 3neo can use LTE of category 6 and reaches up to 300 MBit/s in the downlink and up to 50 MBit/s in the uplink. Of course the router is also downwards compatible with the older 3G/UMTS technology, and up to 42.2 MBit/s in the downlink is possible. If desired, the mobile radio reception can be improved by an external LTE antenna, the required connections are hidden under a cover on the back. ZTE MF287 3neo (3)   In addition to the two connectors for an external antenna, there are also four RJ-45 Gigabit LAN connections as well as an RJ-11 telephone connection. Also the connection for the power supply is on the back, the plug for 12V/5A is also suitable for operation on an external battery/Powerbank, but unfortunately no MicroUSB connection for power supply has been installed. The built-in rechargeable battery in the 3neo / ZTE MF287 has a capacity of 3020 mAh and is supposed to allow an operating time of up to 4 hours without power supply. ZTE MF287 3neo (2) The WLAN in the 3neo runs on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, the router can supply up to 64 devices at the same time. As a convenience function, for example, a guest network function as well as a WLAN timer is available. The connection is to be set up quickly thanks to QR code and “3Home” app for the smartphone without complicated password input.

Availability

The 3neo LTE router is now available in Austria. However, the 3neo LTE router has a netlock, so it can only be used with SIM cards from 3 Austria. If you want the unlocked 3neo, you may check www.4gltemall.com and the unlocked version of 3neo would be available in future time. ZTE MF287 3neo (1)

Huawei Presents B618 LTE Cat11 Router

The fourth mobile LTE radio generation is becoming more and more powerful, with LTE Advanced Pro and 4.5G, respectively, currently experiencing a new leap in speed. Some 4G smartphones and mobile hotspots already support LTE category 11 or higher, while LTE Cat6 with 300 MBit/s in LTE router models was the highest of the feelings. A few weeks ago, Huawei presents a new 4G LTE Router with Ethernet port and SIM card slot, the model number is Huawei B618, which supports LTE of category 11 with up to 600 MBit/s in the downlink and 50 MBit/s in the uplink.

Huawei B618 B618S B618s-22d (1)

Huawei B618 Appearance

The Huawei B618 router visually resembles the design of the Huawei E5180 cube and can therefore be designated as its successor. The device is square and quite “high” built, on the front there are various LEDs as well as a WPS button. On the back there is a power button, two RJ-45 Gigabit LAN ports (one of which can also function as a WAN port), as well as a USB 2.0 port. There is also an RJ-11 connection for an analog telephone or fax machine as well as the connection for the external power supply. Under one cover are two connectors for an external antenna. There is no battery for mobile use.

Huawei B618 WiFi Router Technical Specifications

The modem in the Huawei B618 works with LTE Cat11 and achieves data rates of up to 600 MBit/s in the downlink as well as 50 MBit/s in the uplink. Which LTE Advanced Pro / 4.5G features are supported exactly is still unknown, but in any case, Triple Carrier Aggregation is on board. This allows the Huawei B618 to bundle three different frequency ranges with a maximum of 20 MHz each. To get to 600 MBit/s is enough but not the same, as the 256QAM modulation controls the modem in the downlink. Alternatively, the support for 4 × 4 MIMO would be conceivable whether the B618 can do this, but is currently not clearly identified.

The WLAN module allows connection to up to 64 devices at the same time in the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz band. The maximum data rate is 867 Mbps (802.11 ac), the WLAN antennas are fixed in the Huawei B618 and cannot be exchanged.

 Huawei B618 B618S B618s-22d (3)

Until now, the Huawei B618 only appears in Poland at Play (February 2017), where it is marketed in conjunction with the “4G LTE ULTRA” offer. As mobile radio networks continue to grow, however, it is likely that the Huawei B618 LTE router will also find their way to other countries and to other providers, which is often the case with Huawei LTE router models, however, user should pay close attention to the supported features and frequency bands, as Huawei can often optimize the routers for the respective provider and remove individual functions such as the telephone function. The B618 router available model number Huawei B618s-22d in Poland at Play seems to be unbranded and it may be suitable for the other market in Europe as it supports all important LTE band 1, 3, 7, 8, 20.

Ethernet / LAN / WAN

The main function you will find on this router is precisely the ability to share your 4G, 3G or 2G data connection via Ethernet or WiFi with many connected users. The WiFi range could cover around 200 meters. The connection is super easy, just connect the modem of your internet provider via Ethernet cable to the Huawei B310 and configure it according to the type of connection that your provider uses.

As an additional feature, the router will also offer you the possibility of cloning a MAC address, if necessary.

HUAWEI B310 4G Router wifi (7)

WiFi

Per my personal experience, I usually have to use Wi-Fi extenders at my home, but with the Huawei B310 Router, it was unnecessary to have the extender, so the WiFi coverage from B310 CPE is really trustful. Also, the speed I had turned out to be very good and with a low ping when connecting.

In terms of configurations, the B310 router is capable of broadcasting up to 4 Wi-Fi networks and each can adjust the frequency channel manually, having channels 1 through 11.

HUAWEI B310 4G Router wifi (3)

As for security, you can decide whether to leave the name of your Wi-Fi network visible or not, in addition to being able to select a WEP, WPA2-PSK or WPA/WPA2-PSK password. If you want even more security, you can filter up to 10 quotas using the MAC address of each device.

Security

The Huawei B310 router turned out to be pretty perfect, in fact I thought it was something simpler, but I was very wrong. Here we can configure a firewall, filter by MAC and IP address, even virtual servers to protect our devices.

You can also open ports easily, apply DMZ configurations, enable UPnP, adjust NAT, filter by domain names or apply Dynamic DNS.

HUAWEI B310 4G Router wifi (6)

Phone Function

Something that totally differentiates from the other 4G routers is the possibility of being able to connect a fixed telephone and make & receive calls using the mobile network of your operator.

You pick up the handset and the Huawei B310 router itself will tone your fixed network phone, being ready to call any phone number, as long as your mobile operator allows it. It’s as if you were making a call from a cell phone, but here you do it from a landline. You can also receive calls in it, and if the landline has a viewfinder, you can see the number of the person who is calling the number assigned to you by your mobile operator.

This function proves to be quite useful for those who want to have internet and telephone in a single device. With the Huawei B310, you will have Wi-Fi internet and fixed network telephone to call and receive calls.

Conclusion

There are many 4G Routers in the market and we had the opportunity to try several models, but I personally like the Huawei B310 router much more than the others, since I found it quite useful in terms of functions.

The first thing I liked was its Wi-Fi coverage, which reaches up to 200 meters, which in my case was more than enough to keep me good signal throughout my house without WiFi extender.

The external antennas that this router brings, served me enough to improve the reception of the signal from the operator, as this LTE CPE B310 makes the signal is received much more intensely than what you currently receive on a smartphone, which ensures you a very good service.

I personally used Vodafone 4G network and shared it via Wi-Fi in my house, reaching speeds in excess of 50Mbps, which I found remarkable. And since I do not have a fixed telephone at my house, I took advantage of connecting one to this router. The latter is very useful for people who do not have a fixed Internet and telephone service, in addition to saving a lot of money in the monthly fixed charge, having the freedom to choose the plan yourself which suits you.

Considering the full practical functions for users, we would certainly recommend it as an excellent alternative.

GCT GDM7243Q chipset is often used on 2X2 MIMO for telecom, which has few advantages, but its availability makes it possible to use 4X4 MIMO in near future.

Huawei B5328 interfaces

In this version Huawei B5328-155, it has a single Gigabit Ethernet port and the WiFi band is only on 2.4 GHz, which seems not enough for a high-end router, and the 4 x 4 mimo technology is only highlights.

After the Algerian Internet users who have the possibility to use this B5328 router via the operator MOBILIS, Vodafone also carries out tests in 4X4 MIMO on its 4G network. And it seems that the operators in German, Switzerland and Austria are in discussions with Huawei.

Huawei B5328 accessories

Here now, the latest 4G LTE Router is Huawei E5186, which is LTE Category 6(Rel 12). After Huawei presents the B5328 LTE CPE, we would expect more similar 4G LTE Routers available in near future. Of course, the routers would do their best performance after the network carriers upgraded their networks.
