Technical Features

With 11 x 7 x 7 centimeters and 250 grams in weight, the A1 Internet box 4G/LTE E5180 is portable enough to be used as a mobile LTE router. The micro-SIM card comes in a slot on the bottom of the unit. In addition to the technical specifications, the design attracts the eyes. It is probably no exaggeration to say that Huawei E5180 is the currently most fashionable LTE router in the world.

Mobile Internet

With the support LTE Category 4 and provided an appropriate collective as well as a developed network, Huawei E5180 Cube could achieve download speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s and 50 Mbit/s speeds for upload at 800, 1,800 and 2,600MHz. If no LTE network available, thanks to the support of DC-HSPA+, the E5180 Cube could reach download speed up to 42 Mbit/s. The only drawback that we could find in the router: It has incomprehensibly no connections or ports for external antennas. Therefore, one should keep a close eye on reception quality. If the signal is weak, you should move the location of the cube.

Wireless LAN

Up to 32 devices in the house can be supplied with the A1 Internet box 4G/LTE E5180 via WLAN. The connection is elegantly solved: By pressing the blue backlit lid of the box, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n is activated. Huawei promises a wireless range of up to 250 meters with a possible maximum speed of 300 Mbit/s.

Safety

At the same time, the cover also serves as a WPS button, with the click of a button easily and quickly WPS encryption is built (WPA and WPA2 are also supported). The A1 E5180 dominated UPnP (Universal Plug & Play) and is also protected by an integrated firewall.

Connections

For wired Internet connections, the E5180 has only one Ethernet port, here you would already want multiple ports. On the back there are the RJ45 output, the RJ11 port for an analog phone or fax machine as well as the connection for the 12-volt power adapter.

Alcatel One Touch Link Y858 Review

Following the leader Huawei, many vendors are trying to supply their new devices supporting LTE Category 4. Here now we get a new a small, mobile hotspot with LTE: Alcatel One Touch Link Y858. The Y858 has a fast LTE modem for speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s and up to 15 devices can access internet via Y858 simultaneously. The Alcatel Y858 has improved much on the performance and we will see what the difference between it and its predecessor Alcatel Y850 are.

Alcatel Link Y858 Specifications
It’s necessary to list the specifications of Alcatel Y858 in a compact table:

Features Data
Manufacturer & Model: Alcatel One Touch Link LTE (Model Number: Y858)
Technologies: LTE (4G), UMTS (3G) GSM (2G)
Frequencies: * LTE: 800/900/1800/2100/2600* UMTS: 900/1800/2100* GSM: 850/900/1800/1900
Maximum speed: LTE: 150 Mbit/s download, 50Mbit/s upload* UMTS: 42.2 Mbit/s down, 5.76 Mbit/s up (when using DC-HSPA+)* GSM: 238 kbit/s (when using EDGE )
WIFI: 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz), support up to 15 users simultaneously
Dimensions: 89 x 62 x 11.5 mm
Others: MicroSD slot up to 32 GB | Changeable battery 1800 mAh | MicroSIM

Appearance
The Alcatel One Touch Link Y858 comes in a small cardboard box, along with a power adapter to charge the battery, a USB cable and a rechargeable battery. The unit is designed quite compact and light, making a good first impression. There are four LED indicators on the front for displaying power, WiFi, SMS and battery. But we can’t find the connections for an external antenna.

The power button is placed together with the WPS button on the top. This solution seems little happy, the Chinese manufacturer TCT Mobile had power and WPS button performed better separated. Other keys do not exist. The battery compartment can be easily opened, there also the MicroSIM card and a MicroSD card slots. The two slots for the cards are designed exemplary: the cards are inserted and locked with a metal slide. So the use of Nano sim cards with adapter is safe.

Although the Alcatel One Touch Link looks rather unspectacular from the outside, the software has it all: the Web interface is accessed through the address 192.168.1.1 and comes with a design. There are some “cards”, which are particularly useful in the operation via a touchscreen. Based on the good design, users do not suffer from the functions: all the usual configuration options which you could expect from a mobile hotspot are available. This includes, for example, the ability to set the device to a particular network technology such as LTE. In addition to the web interface, there is yet another way to serve: the Alcatel One Touch Link App. It is available for iOS and Android devices and works reliably.

Network Technology
The Alcatel One Touch Link supports all the latest mobile technologies, from GSM via UMTS to LTE. The maximum speed is 150 Mbit/s provided via LTE category 4, according to an extensive network and an appropriate tariff. In the test, the peak download speed could reach 52 Mbit/s in the downlink and 21 Mbit/s in the uplink, the latencies were between 20 and 40 milliseconds in LTE. On UMTS up to 42.2 Mbit/s are possible with a telecom card in the downlink and 4.2 Mbit/s in the uplink measured. In stationary use the Internet was very stable, but in mobile use, however, we noticed that the reception in the UMTS network is not optimal in particular.

The wireless range is fine, but no better than other mobile wireless hotspots. The speed was in the test often significantly below 120 Mbit/s, at least according to the display in Windows connection manager and the MacBook. The problem is that with such a slow wireless connection, you cannot exploit the maximum LTE speed of 150 Mbit/s initially. Here a WLAN module that supports 802.11ac would have made sense.

The battery lasted approximately 6 hours at permanent use in the test; this is a very good value, if you consider the capacity of only 1800 mAh, perhaps due to the low energy consumption on the waiver of a display on the router.

Conclusion
The Alcatel One Touch Link LTE Y858 operates reliably and quickly on any cellular network, and has a good, replaceable battery, especially the software that the Web Interface has an innovative design and yet offers all the important settings which is easy to operate even on smartphone and tablet. Overall, the Alcatel One Touch Link Y858 is a good device, and it’s enough for common use for network connection.

Huawei E5377T 4G Mobile Hotspot Test

It has been a short time since Huawei E5377 4G Mobile router is available on the market. Now there is a new mobile LTE hotspot Huawei E5377T available which combines a very good quality with a strong battery. Up to 12 hours working time is possible with the E5377T MiFi router. The Huawei E5377T is very technically similar with its sister model Huawei E5377, which also has LTE with up to 150 Mbit/s download speed, Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as well as a wireless extender function. The main difference is the design and battery. Today we will take some test for this new pocket router.

Huawei E5377T Technical Specifications
Before the test, it’s necessary to review the technical specifications of the Huawei E5377T. The support bands should be only for the version E5377Ts-32. Huawei sold the device even with slightly modified number in other markets, then the support bands may vary.

Removable Battery 3560 mAh

Appearance
The Huawei E5377T is packed in a cardboard box, where the most important technical data are shown. Next to the device itself, there is a plug adapter with USB port and a short USB to Micro-USB cable to charge the mobile WLAN hotspot. At first glance, the Huawei E5377T is packaged in white high-gloss plastic and is surrounded by a silver trim ring. On the front you will find a monochrome display and the power button. On the upper side, there is a menu button on the lower side and the Micro-USB port for charging. In addition to the micro-USB port, there are also two CRC-9 connectors for an external antenna. The compact dimensions and the comparatively strong battery of 3,560 mAh make Huawei E5377T look quite thick, the weight is higher than many other mobile LTE hotspots.

Software: web interface and app
The establishment of Huawei E5377T is quite simple: first you open the battery compartment and inserts the SIM card. It will also work with nano(with card adpater) and micro-SIM card, here one should be a bit careful, so as not to damage the contacts. After the battery is inserted and start the router via the power button. Since the wireless connection is secured, you have to enter a password: this is with the wireless network name in the battery cover or the display of the device. Now you only have to enter the PIN code, then the internet is already connected to the Internet.

There are two methods to enter the PIN code and do the general operation and configuration of Huawei E5377T. First, of course, the web interface, which is accessible from any browser at the IP address 192.168.8.1. Secondly, it’s possible to control over the Huawei HiLink app from smartphones and tablets. The app can be download either in the App Store search, or you can directly scan a QR code that is shown on the device.

The configuration is done completely automatically. Nevertheless, the web interface or the app for many users will be important, for example, to change the wireless network name and password, or to view the usage statistics. Also the optional MicroSD memory card can be accessed through the web interface and app.

Fast Internet with LTE Cat4
The modem of Huawei E5377T is Huawei HiSilicon. The maximum speed is 150 Mbit/s for the downlink and 50 Mbit/s for the uplink, this must be posted in the LTE network and the network operators support these speeds. LTE Cat6 with Carrier Aggregation is unfortunately not supported, if you prefer LTE cat6 for even faster speeds, you have to turn to Huawei E5786.

Of course the Huawei E5377T is also backward compatible with GSM and UMTS. In 3G network via DC-HSPA+, download speeds of up to 42.2 megabits per second in the downlink are possible and HSUPA up to 5.76 Mbit/s can be achieved. User can setup the preferred network in the web interface and app. Sometimes, the network signal is weak, you can also connect an external antenna. These are two CRC-9 ports. With external antenna, the device can get stable and better network.

WLAN and battery
Maximum 10 devices can be connected wirelessly via WLAN from the Huawei E5377T simultaneously. Another one unit can use the Internet connection via USB cable. It’s sparked either the 2.4 GHz band or 5 GHz band. Although the latter has a shorter range and is not supported by all devices, but it offers a much freer connecting, making it at trade fairs or big events easily available. The wireless band can be adjusted directly on the device via the small screen by the menu and power button, a simultaneous operation of both frequency bands is not possible.

The maximum speed via WLAN is 300 Mbit/s. Unfortunately, the latest WLAN ac standard is not supported. The Huawei E5377T has another special feature: the Wireless Extender. The Wireless Extender mode is directly switched on the device via the small screen by the menu and power button, however, the configuration is done via the software.

The battery has a capacity of 3,560 mAh and can be easily replaceable by the user. Under the battery there is the slot for the SIM card (standard size 2FF) and the MicroSD memory card. In addition, user can find the information about the access for wireless and web interface and device-specific information such as the IMEI number. The battery provides the manufacturer for a period of about 12 hours.

Conclusion
The Huawei E5377T is a good mobile LTE router. Despite heavy battery, the model is quite compact and can be taken easily in pocket. The functionality is with Dual Band WLAN, LTE Cat4 and connections for an external antenna and worked well in the test as you would expect. All you get with the Huawei E5377T is a very well-equipped mobile LTE router, which you can recommend without restrictions.

Speedbox LTE mini II (Huawei E5786) Review

The Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II is the first mobile wireless router with integrated modem for LTE-Advanced category 6. Up to 300 megabits per second in the downlink and 50 Mbit/s in the uplink are possible in the network of Germany Telekom. The successor of the Telekom Speedbox LTE mini also has a display easy to read, a fast Wi-Fi connection and a strong battery. The unit is packed in a cardboard box, similar to those of smartphones. In addition, there is a USB power adapter (100-240V, output 5V, 2A) and a USB cable.

The modem operates in 2G, 3G and LTE in the mode. The WLAN interface supports the current 802.11ac standard on 2.4 and 5 GHz. A bright display indicates the current operating status. The 3000 mAh battery provides strong for up to 10 hours of operation. The specs of Speedbox LTE Mini II look similar to Huawei E5786 and it comes from the original factory model E5786. After customizations by Telekom, Speedbox LTE Mini II is still a powerful router.

First impression: Small and portable

The Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II is equipped with a weight of 145 grams and small pocket size like a smartphone. The front is covered by a transparent plastic sheet while the sides and back are made of matt black plastic. On the front of the display and the underlying telecom logo, we can find the power button. The display shows all sorts of information, about the network operator, the used data volume, online time or network technology. From the power and the menu button, user can do some (few) quick settings. Below is the microUSB port for charging the battery or to connect to a computer. If you remove the cover from the back, you can find the slot for the Micro SIM card and the slot for microSD memory cards.

The battery is installed in the router and unfortunately can’t be replaceable by the user. All the other ports are found under the back cover. Right next to the MiniUSB, the two ports for an external antenna is to improve the reception. The connectors are protected by narrow plastic part. In addition, Huawei has saved some much space, so it was difficult to attach the external antennas.

The modem of Speedbox mini II LTE supports LTE 800, 850, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 megahertz, making it work not only in Germany but also worldwide in many LTE networks overseas. The maximum speed is 300 Mbit/s in the downlink, some conditions must be met and then it can thus achieve high speeds.

Of course, the Telekom Speedbox LTE support mini II supports not only LTE but also GSM and UMTS. It works on the frequency ranges of 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz on GSM and the UMTS 850, 900, 1900 and 2100MHz. So the router could use in many UMTS networks in North America. The maximum speed in the UMTS Network could reach 42.2 Mbit/s in the downlink and 5.76 Mbit/s in the uplink, if the DC-HSPA+ technology is enabled on the network.

The reception quality of the Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II is very good both in the UMTS and the LTE network, often significantly better than that of many smartphones. Even in areas with poor reception can be surfed very quickly over LTE on the Internet.

The connection to the terminal device is either via a USB port or just using wireless connection. The Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II has a current wireless 802.11a/b/g/n /ac module installed, which is fast and optionally transmits on the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Up to 10 devices can be connected via WiFi through Telekom Speedbox mini II LTE and the coverage of wireless network is about 10 to 15 meters.
The operation of Telecom Speedbox LTE mini II is quite simple. After inserting the SIM card, the device must be switched on to be connected (by pressing the power button for 2-3 seconds) with a computer, tablet or smartphone via Wi-Fi. The corresponding WLAN password is displayed on the router, but can also be seen under the cover on the back. Of course, other settings such as the name and password of the wireless network can still be changed. These settings can be done directly in the browser via the web interface; alternatively there is also an app for your smartphone (Android and iOS operating system). Enter the address bar192.168.8.1 (the router’s IP) in the browser to enter the menu.

The web interface is kept very simple and allows only the most important settings. More specific things such as setting the router to a particular frequency band or a detailed diagnostic function are unfortunately missing. Also information about key reception parameters, such as RSRQ or SINR is missing entirely. There is, however, a special tool, which we will continue to introduce more below. In the tab “Statistics” can be accessed information about data usage and time spent online. It is also possible to store a data plan, such as the volume values from your own mobile calling. Below you will find three selected sample screenshots of the user interface.

Conclusion: Very good mobile LTE Router

The Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II is a very good mobile LTE router. In particular, the good speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s and the excellent reception characteristics are convincing. And the WLAN module is fast and future proof.

Huawei Prime E5878 4G Mobile Hotspot First View

At IFA in Berlin, Huawei has shown the E5878 LTE router for first time, a very thin mobile hotspot with metal frame and glass covers. The size of new router E5878 is only as small as a credit card; it is only about 7.5mm thick and weighs only 80 grams including battery. On the technical side, the Huawei E5878 offers LTE with up to 150 MBit/s in downlink and an operating time of up to 8 hours.

Huawei Prime E5878 is the first mobile hotspot from Huawei, which was developed with a focus on design. It is much smaller, thinner and smarter than most devices currently available and could therefore attract more audiences. Unlike other mobile hotspot, Huawei E5878 appears in unusual colors such as light blue, gold and pink to meet users various demand.

Not only E5878 focus on design and materials, but also Huawei E5878 dominates in the technical data. It offers LTE Category 4 with up to 150 MBit/s in downlink and 50 Mbit/s in the uplink, what’s more, DC-HSPA+ UMTS network are backward. If the Huawei E5878 is unlocked, it would support a lot of bands to be operational worldwide.

The operation is done in the browser via a web interface or via App for Smartphone and Tablet. The Huawei Mobile WiFi app is available for both Android and iOS and of course also shows important status information such as the consumed data volume.
On the front of the Huawei E5878, a small OLED display is attached with a diagonal of just one inch.  Next to the network operator, the battery and the network available are displayed and the data volume and the online time. It’s a pity that the WLAN module in the Huawei E5878 supports only connections in the frequency range of 2.4 GHz (802.11b/g/n). This could prove to be a disadvantage in some situations, because this frequency range is overloaded quickly in some places such as trade shows or events. In total, a maximum of 10 devices can be connected simultaneously via Wi-Fi with the E5878, a secondary user can use the Internet connection via USB.

Use Huawei Prime to stay online for up to 8 hours of use in LTE mode or 380 hours of standby time provided by the 1900 mAh battery. What’s more, all of these features can be controlled remotely by a smartphone using the ‘Huawei Mobile WiFi’ application available to download via major app stores. Huawei Prime comes in white and black, and will be available in Europe, Middle East, and other markets from mid-September. Customized versions including sunny gold, peach pink or turquoise green, with polka dot or diamond texture effects, will also be available in selected markets.

The USB port on the Vodafone K5150 is protected by a red plastic cap and cannot be folded or recessed into the modem. So if there is limited space around your PC, it would be sometimes quite annoying to plug the modem. The brother model Vodafone K5007 features a rotatable USB, which is more user-friendly. Technically, the K5150 is part of the upper class: LTE with up to 150 Mbit/s downstream and 50 Mbit/s in upload, provided that the mobile network and the tariff also allow such high speeds.

The usable frequency ranges of 800, 1800, 2100 and 2600 megahertz cover all previously used in Germany LTE frequencies. And the modem is also usable abroad. Of course, 2G GPRS/EDGE and 3G UMTS are supported, so you can even use the internet where there is no LTE network available. In the UMTS network, data accelerator DC-HSPA+ is used to produce up to 42.2 Mbit/s download and to 5.76 Mbit/s upload. The usable frequency bands are limited here to 900/2100 MHz.

Connections and extensions

On the side of the Vodafone K5150, Two ports for an external antenna are available, and there is a slot for MicroSD type memory cards, using which one can use the modem as a storage medium. Up to 32 GB can be upgraded. The software supports all major operating systems like Windows XP, Windows 7, and 8 as well as Mac OS X and provides a good overview of the important information such as the data usage and the reception strength.

Technology

On Huawei E5372, there is virtually nothing to be desired. It has not only mastered LTE in the popular category 3 but also supports the closest modern variant CAT4. This means that download rates can be reach as far as 100 Mbit/s, even 150 Mbit/s. The E5372 Router can be used virtually with all LTE providers in European countries, as the bands are supported at 800,900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz. It’s a pity that Huawei E5372 can’t be used with 4G networks in United States. But the device offers backward compatibility to all relevant 3G and 2G standards. So the 3G DC-HSDPA+ is supported. Under poor reception conditions, an external antenna can be connected. On the bottom there are two slots for the type TS-9 antenna.

In the Wi-Fi range, up to 10 users can be connected via hotspot on the Huawei E5372. Configuration is done via a menu in the web browser. The installation of special software is therefore not necessary. The integrated battery is characterized by a capacity of 1780 mAh, which should be enough for an operating time of 6 hours according to the manufacturer. If user operates the router using the USB cable to the laptop or PC, the power supply is continuous.

And user can also control the device via app. For Apple devices, a special free version called “Mobile WiFi App” is available. Important information, such as signal strength, connection time and data volume consumed, displayed in a small front panel.

Compact design, fast LTE

The Huawei B880 is distinguished by the design quite different from its sister model, the Huawei B593. The latter is available for “Vodafone B2000” or “Telekom Speedport LTE II”. The B880 is not only smaller than the B593, and it also has a completely different design and has fewer connection ports on the back. Inside the Huawei B880, there is a HiSilicon Hi6920 modem which supports speed up to 150 Mbit/s over LTE Category 4. If there is no LTE available on site, it is accessible via the UMTS accelerator DC-HSPA+ and nevertheless still get a speed of up to 42.2 Mbit/s in the downlink and 5.76 Mbit/s in the uplink. Two rear connectors on the back allow requesting the gain of the radio signal.

Devices of all kinds are either connected via LAN cable or via WLAN with the Huawei B880 LTE router. The LAN port reaches a maximum of 100 Mbit/s, Wi-Fi speed at least 150 Mbit/s. At least one Gigabit LAN port would have it may be. The maximum 32 WiFi devices could be connected simultaneously, which is appropriate for most users. As a special feature to mention is the USB 2.0 interface. Storage media or printers on the network for several terminals are available. After configuration is done, just like a normal router, a corresponding web interface that can be opened in any browser.

VoIP Function

As one of the few LTE Routers, Huawei B880 also has a phone function. While no calls are possible directly via the mobile network, but the device is designed for Voice over IP (VoIP) and can be configured accordingly. An analog telephone can be connected to the RJ-11 port on the back.
